I tried this place out a while back and was pleasantly surprised. The place is located in the strip mall between GameStop and WingStop so you can't have real high hopes. It kind of reminds me of a cross between Five Guys, with a twist of hole in the wall decor. Needless to say, I've come here several times now. They give pretty big portions with a low price. Recommendation: Homemade guacamole. Although, fair warning, sometimes it comes straight out of the fridge and can be super cold!

A carne asada burrito and medium soda - $8.15. Neither expensive or cheap. It could have had a little more meat on it, but overall, it tasted really good. The downside though is that they gave me cheap plastic silverware when I dined at the store, so cutting the burrito up got kind of messy. I opted to eat the other half with my hands only, that got kind of messy too as I had added some of their sauce (which squirts all over the place if full) and the sauce oozed a bit. I'd go back - it was pretty good, but I'm sure there are better not too far away.

This place is great! We go here about once a week and I really enjoy their chorizo sopes and my husband always gets the steak nachos. I also cannot leave here without a Horchata-it's great! I do wish their steak had more seasoning which is my only complaint. It's a great, local, affordable quick place to get Mexican. The staff is very friendly (and you always see the same few people which makes it nice). I like to call ahead and orders are usually always ready within 15 minutes but they are very quick if you just go in.

These positive reviews must be from a previous owner. I just stopped at this place and it sucks. Flat out sucks. I love Mexican food, and like to try new taco places, but I picked up tacos on the way home from work and couldn't finish them. Not entirely sure what animals these were before they ended up on the grill at this place - but it was neither pig nor cow. Steak tacos were rubbery and chewy and had this taste I am unable to describe. Pork tacos had potential... The spices were pretty good, but again the meat was questionable as hell. Combined with the genius manning the register that got my order wrong, then overcharged me... I would give this place one hell of a thumbs down.

For the love of God, add some water to the chicken or something)! it's been dry for two years! Last chance Chavas, this is where I get off. Too many places around for mediocre Mexican.

I ate here again. I had a al pastor burrito, and it was just fantastic! It this was closer to my house I would eat here all the time.

Awesome food at a reasonable price. Chavas' is not place you go for great atmosphere, but this clean, functional restaurant serves up great food. Mexican food is a lot like Italian food, not really one style, but a collection of different regional styles. This is why there can be so much debate about whether a dish is prepared "authentically." This little place serves food that tastes more like my grandmother's Mexican cooking than anywhere I've ever come across. My grandmother was from the northern Mexican state of Sonora, and I believe the food here is Sonoran, or Chihuahuan (yes the little dogs are named after a state in Mexico). It's all good, but I would suggest at least once you try the chorizo burrito (spicy hot Mexican sausage) and the refried beans are incredible.

Great guacamole but chips tasted like they came out of the bag which was a very disappointment but the flavor of the guacamole made up for it. Not to salty nor not too much lemon taste. Price seem fair for tacos based on menu. Will definitely try them for main dishes.

  • Jennifer S.

They have the best chiles rellenos. Their rice is awesome (not greasy or salty..nor does it taste like ricearoni). Worth EVERY penny. The steak tacos...OMG YES. Must try their tamales (not dense and dry like others I've had). Friendly, patient staff... Nice, clean, welcoming interior. All around awesome.

Great tacos!!! One of my favorite Mexican restaurants, the sauce isn't hot enough but other than that I have never been disappointed.

I used to live by the original and ate it so much that an esthetician looked at my skin and told me I was eating too many spicy foods (thanks Chavas!). I was delighted when I found a Chavas nearer to my home and heart. I love their avocado sandwiches, the guac is good, cheese quesedillas are great with lettuce and tomato like a taco, but best of all is the red hot sauce. I drink them at home (or sometimes in the car when I can't wait any longer) and get the salsa with the red sauce only. I wish that I had the recipe for it. I eat in when I can just so I can use half the bottle on all my food and my mouth and stomach can be on fire. The only thing they could do to make me love them more is to deliver to Forest Park and make a hot sauce from habaneros.

This is our go-to spot for quick, cheap, delicious tacos. I recommend the barbacoa taco, and the missus really likes their chicken tacos. Their Chips/Guacamole are cheap and delicious as well. We can feed ourselves and two picky kids here for under 20 bucks, and you certainly can't beat that. I haven't treid any of their other menu offerings, but you can't go wrong here if you're in the neighborhood and want some tacos!

I find myself always comparing steak tacos from other restaurants to Chavas Tacos, and yet this is still my top place for steak tacos so far. The owners are friendly and bring out your food quickly. I've never had an issue with service here. I always order three Carne Asada (steak) tacos with lettuce, tomato and cilantro that comes on corn tortillas. It's a steal at $1.99 each. I think what makes the tacos so delicious is their salsa (my favorite is the green one). My mouth is watering just thinking about the tacos. This is definitely a must-go place. I highly recommend it.

This is the best Mexican food in the whole chicago area. Everything is amazing I lived in southern Texas and I have never been able to find Mexican food that even compares to it but these guys here do. The prices are fair and service is fast. Every one is friendly as well if u don't try this place out your crazy

It took me longer to eat here than it should have because I completely stereotyped the place before ever having the food. It's 1) in a strip mall beside a Kinkos 2) contains a menu/dish item in its name (see all terrible Chinese places) 3) has effectively no decor/identity in the restaurant - just white walls. Not exactly my hit list for great mexican food. I've usually had better luck going to random all-Spanish signage places in Hispanic neighborhoods. But, by far the best authentic style tacos I've had in the city. No flair, just terrific ingredients and flavors. I'll crave this place if I go too long without it. Get the carne asada.

  • Marlene C.

I ordered the steak guesadilla and added guac. It was horrible!! Steak had gristle and the guac had a funny taste and color was brown. Spit it out and left. Never again!

Too much grizzle on the meat. My number one pet peeve when it comes to carne asada tacos. I like a well grilled meat and zero grizzle. The salsa verde and salsa roja were so watery. I can't believe that they would serve salsa that watery. Rice was ok. I was excited about trying the chile rellenos next time I stopped by but I don't think I will return. Still in search of a great taco in Galewood.

I stopped in to Chavas Tacos for a quick takeout dinner. The chicken burrito dinner included rice and re fried beans. The burrito was good but certainly not the best I have had. Overall a solid quick service Mexican establishment with plenty of choices.

  • Daina B.

Portions are huge and it's inexpensive so that's good. I think we ordered enough food for four people though. The food that we had was not that good at all. I had a steak burrito and the steak had no seasoning whatsoever, there was way too much sour cream and it overall just wasnt good. The beef nachos were about the same. I didnt enjoy the guacamole at all, it almost tasted like they used bad avacados. My husband wants to try breakfast here, but other than that I will not be back for the other menu items.

  • Justyna K.

Judging this place for what it is- a hole in the wall taco place- it gets five stars. I mean, they NEVER mess up my order. I work with eight people and when I place orders it can get confusing, but they always get it right. I agree, they could do something with their chicken, it's sometimes very dry (I add sour cream and lots of salsa!). But, the menu is gigantic, great prices and they serve breakfast all day long. Thanks for being around to satisfy my taco cravings!

    (5)
  • Corey S.

They have the best shredded chicken tacos. I love the salsa here too.

    (4)
  • Kymberly J.

It is hard to find good tacos with juicy chicken. This place met my expectations and had decent, not overly juicy, chicken on their tacos. What you get in a chicken dinner is awesome for the price. I didnt get to finish my entire dinner. The menu looked pretty good over all but there were some specials posted in Spanish only and I am only learning spanish at this point. Maybe I can go back in a few months and be able to find out what they are.

made my first trip to Chavas last night. i got 2 chorizo tacos wit onions and cilantro. i also got a burrito el pastor. Tacos- very tasty.. 4 stars Burrito- average, maybe 3 stars i will go back as i want to try the breakfast

I can't believe no one has reviewed Chavas! I am proud to be the first. Why? Because Chavas is a shining example of all that is good and right with the modern independent taqueria. Sure, you can order eggs and brains, but no one looks at you funny if, like me, you prefer a simple all white meat chicken burrito with some fantastic spicy hot sauce. And the guac is both respectable and available to go in large carry out containers. Go -- eat a burrito. You'll be glad you did.

Love this place, my friend used to work in the area and we would go here if we need a quick lunch or dinner. Sure you can get tacos anywhere, but not great tacos. There chorizo and barbacoa is exceptional and so is there horchata. I'm not going to say that this is the best out there but it is definitely the best in the area. Oh yeah there red Hot Sauce is amazing and probably one of things I miss the most.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
